Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Tataouine - Ksour - Chenini - Ksar ghilane


The itinerary commences with a departure from your accommodation, utilizing the Roman road towards Tataouine. A photo opportunity will be provided at the renowned Chahbania salt lake, accompanied by a program overview.


The journey proceeds through Tataouine to a visit to Ksar Ouled Soltan  a remarkably preserved 15th-century fortified granary (ksar) in southern Tunisia, built by the Amazigh (Berber) people from mudbrick, featuring multiple stories of vaulted storage rooms (ghorfas) around two courtyards, used to store grain and goods.


After that we go Ksar Daghaghra a traditional, fortified Berber granary village (a ksar) in Tunisia's Tataouine region, built by North African tribes for storing crops and defense, featuring stacked, vaulted rooms (ghorfas) and central courtyards, and is part of the UNESCO Tentative List for its unique architecture and cultural significance, representing a distinctive style of Saharan vernacular heritage.


Then we continue to Chenini a historic Berber village, famous for its stunning, ancient architecture built into a rocky hillside, dominated by a distinctive white mosque and ancient granaries after that we proceed to Douiret is a historic, ruined Berber village in southern Tunisia, near Tataouine, famous for its hilltop "ksar" (fortified granary) and ancient troglodyte (cave) dwellings carved into the mountainside, offering a glimpse into traditional North African life.

Upon completion of our after the lunch heading to the oasis of Ksar Ghilane, where the greenery of palm trees meets the ocher color of sand dunes stretching as far as the eye can see. Take your time to swim in the hot water spring nestled in the middle of the oasis.

Day 2: Douz - Tozeur


After breakfast we go to Douz, a dynamic oasis town in southern Tunisia, is recognized as the "Gateway to the Sahara" due to its strategic position at the periphery of extensive desert dunes.This excursion offers a rich cultural experience and an opportunity to acquire authentic souvenirs while observing daily life in the desert region.


Lunch will be served at Local restaurant.


 Following lunch, we will proceed to Tozeur, a historic oasis city in Tunisia's southwest. Known as the "Pearl of the Desert," Tozeur is renowned for its extensive palm groves, exceptional dates, distinctive brick architecture featuring geometric patterns, and its strategic position as a gateway to the Sahara Desert, where we will be spending the night.

Upon our arrival, we will check into the hotel and subsequently proceed to explore the Medina, the historic quarter of Tozeur. 

Tozeur's Medina (Ouled el Hadef) a historic quarter known for its unique architecture, featuring buildings decorated with intricate geometric patterns made from fired bricks, creating a distinctive reddish-brown look.  


Dinner and overnight accommodation will be provided at 4* hotel Ksar rouge or similar.



Day 3:  Chebika - Tamerza - Mides - Mos Espa


Following breakfast, we will proceed to Chebika an exquisite mountain oasis nestled in western Tunisia near the Algerian border, is renowned for its verdant palm groves, natural springs, and a captivating waterfall that descends into a pristine pool. This remarkable setting is framed by dramatic desert mountains and the remnants of an ancient Berber village, presenting an idyllic retreat for those seeking natural beauty, historical insights, and hiking opportunities. Affectionately known as the "Palace of the Sun," Chebika offers a profound appreciation for Tunisia's diverse landscape and rich heritage.


We will proceed to Tamerza, Tunisia's most expansive mountain oasis, is renowned for its breathtaking canyon, perennial waterfalls, and the evocative ruins of its former village, which was deserted following severe rainfall in 1969. This location presents a striking juxtaposition of verdant flora against arid, mountainous terrain, providing opportunities for hiking, photography, and an insight into traditional Berber culture near the Algerian border, thereby drawing visitors who appreciate natural splendor and historical significance.


Then we continue to Mides is a stunning, 3-km long mountain oasis and gorge in southwest Tunisia, near the Algerian border, famous for its dramatic desert scenery, fossil-filled rocks, and, often described as the "Tunisian Far West". It features ancient, abandoned ruins perched on a sheer cliffside and serves as a picturesque filming location for Star Wars.  


Back to the hotel for lunch

Enjoy an exciting off-road adventure to Mos Espa, one of the most famous filming locations of the legendary saga Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace and Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones.

Located near Nefta in the spectacular Ong Jmel Desert, this iconic set represents the hometown of Anakin Skywalker on the desert planet Tatooine. Built in the early 1990s, the site remains an unforgettable destination for film lovers and adventurers alike.

Travel by 4×4 across the dramatic desert landscape and experience the magic of the Sahara as you watch a breathtaking sunset over the golden dunes.

Day 4: Tamezrt - Matmata - Djerba  


Following breakfast, we will proceed to Chott el Djerid, Tunisia's largest salt lake. This expansive, shimmering salt flat in the Sahara Desert, which desiccates during the summer months, reveals vibrant salt crusts and mirages. It provides a dramatic backdrop for oases and has served as a filming location for Star Wars, connecting desert communities such as Tozeur and Nefta. This substantial endorheic basin, nourished by groundwater, transforms into a shallow, colorful body of water in winter and a vast white expanse in summer, generating striking visual phenomena and sustaining distinctive wildlife, thereby establishing itself as a prominent natural and cultural landmark.  

We will proceed to Tamezret is a historic Berber village situated in southern Tunisia, nestled on the slopes of the Matmata Mountains. It is renowned for its distinctive troglodyte (cave) dwellings, which are carved into the rock, providing natural insulation and offering insight into ancient traditions. We will be sampling their specialized tea, prepared with natural herbs. 


Prior to our midday meal, we will be visiting Matmata, a distinctive Berber village situated in southern Tunisia. This village is renowned for its ancient, subterranean "troglodyte" dwellings, which are excavated into the earth around expansive pits to create cool, crater-like courtyards with surrounding rooms. These structures offer natural insulation from the desert heat and gained fame as a filming location for Luke Skywalker's home in Star Wars. These unique cave dwellings provide insight into traditional Berber life, with some still occupied, and integrate harmoniously with the stark, lunar landscape.

 

We will be having lunch at Hôtel Sidi Driss in Matmata, an underground Berber hotel renowned as Luke Skywalker's Lars homestead in the original Star Wars film and Attack of the Clones. This establishment features rooms within ancient cave dwellings (troglodyte pits) and a dining area meticulously recreating the movie set's kitchen. While offering basic, affordable lodging, it provides a unique opportunity to dine in a location iconic to Star Wars fans, making it a significant pilgrimage site despite its simple accommodations.



we will proceed to Djerba and subsequently enjoy a period of relaxation for the remainder of the day at the hotel Ksar .
